What This Tool Does

A signature on the page, without an upload

The editor opens a PDF or image and lets you add a visual electronic signature without sending the file anywhere. It is built for the paperwork that still arrives as a PDF or a phone photo: contracts, consent forms, offer letters, invoices and approval sheets. Sign one page or many, reuse a signature during the session, and export a clean copy that still looks like the original.

Everything uses the same four tools - Signature, Stamp, Text and Marks - so you do not have to learn a second editor when the file type changes.

Key takeaways

  • One editor for PDF and image files, on desktop or phone.
  • Draw, type or upload a signature; paper backgrounds are removed in the browser.
  • Add preset or custom stamps, text, dates, initials and marks.
  • Export a PDF with selectable text and vectors intact, or a PNG or JPG at the original pixel size.
  • No account, email gate, watermark or server upload.
How To Sign

Three steps, no account

The whole flow takes about a minute once the file is open. Nothing is installed and no account is created.

01

Open your file

Choose PDF or Image, then select a file or drop it on the page. A password-protected PDF asks for its password in the browser; an iPhone HEIC photo is converted locally.

02

Add your signature and details

Draw, type or upload a signature, then place stamps, text, dates and marks. Drag each item into position and zoom in to check the small print.

03

Save and send

Download the signed PDF or image at its original resolution. The default filename adds _signed_via_zumper so the signed copy is easy to tell apart from the original.

Signature Options

Draw, type or upload your signature

Every signature is created in the browser and stored only for this session. Pick the method that matches what you have to hand.

Draw

Use a finger, stylus or mouse on the signature pad. Undo strokes, change the ink colour and crop to the ink before placing it.

Type

Type your name and choose from eight script fonts. The signature is rendered at high resolution, so it stays sharp when printed.

Upload

Upload a photo or scan of your signature. The tool removes the paper background, keeps the ink colour and lets you adjust strength and edge smoothness.

Everyday Use

When a signed PDF or image is enough

A visual signature is usually enough when the other side needs a clear record of agreement, not a cryptographic certificate. Common uses include:

  • Freelance and vendor contracts, NDAs and statements of work.
  • Offer letters, onboarding forms and internal approval sheets.
  • School consent slips, admission forms and parent letters.
  • Rent agreements, NOCs and handover checklists - check local stamping or notarisation rules.
  • Invoices, quotations and purchase approvals.
  • Signed photos or scans of IDs and consent forms.

For regulated filings, tenders or contracts that name a specific e-signature provider, use the method the recipient requires.

Compare

PDF or image: choose the right mode

Both modes use the same editor. The difference is the output and what happens to the text layer.

Visual signature vs digital signature certificate (DSC)

Both can put a name on a document, but they solve different problems. A DSC proves who signed and whether the file changed afterwards; a visual signature records your approval on the page.

This page creates a visual signature. It does not replace a DSC where one is required. Check the recipient's rules before signing.

Privacy By Design

Your file stays in your browser

The PDF or image is read with JavaScript in your browser and never posted to a Zumper server. Signatures, stamps and text are held in memory for the current tab; closing the tab discards them. The editor fonts are self-hosted, and no analytics code receives your file content.

Browser extensions and shared devices can still see what is on screen. For highly sensitive documents, use a device you control and check your organisation's policy.

  • No upload, account, email gate or watermark.
  • Files are processed on your device, not on a server.
  • Download the signed copy before closing the tab.
  • Use a trusted device and keep your browser updated.
Questions, Answered

Signing PDFs, answered

Last reviewed October 2026.

Is this PDF signing tool free?

Yes. Zumper's sign PDF online tool is free to use, with no account, email gate, trial limit or watermark. You can sign a PDF or image as often as you need. Everything runs in your browser, so there is no per-document fee or subscription.

Is it safe to sign a document online?

Your file is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to Zumper or a third party. That makes the tool suitable for contracts, forms and ID copies you would rather not send to an unknown server. Use a trusted device, keep your browser updated and download the signed copy before closing the tab.

Can I sign a PDF on my phone?

Yes. The editor is mobile-first and works in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone, including touch dragging and pinch-to-zoom. Draw with a finger or upload a photo of your signature, then tap Save to download the signed file to your phone.

How do I add a signature to a PDF without printing it?

Open the PDF in the tool, choose Signature, then draw, type or upload your signature. Tap the page to place it, drag it into position and add a date or initials if needed. Save the PDF and send the downloaded copy back to the other party.

Can I sign an image or a photo of a document?

Yes. Choose Image mode and open a JPG, PNG, WEBP or HEIC file. The same signature, stamp, text and mark tools work on the image. Export as PNG or JPG at the original pixel size, or save as PDF with the original image bytes embedded.

Does this tool create a legally valid digital signature?

It creates a visual electronic signature, not a certificate-based digital signature (DSC). Many everyday agreements accept a signed copy, but regulated filings and some contracts require a DSC or a specific e-signature provider. Check the recipient's requirements before signing.

Will the signed PDF keep its original quality and text?

Yes. The PDF exporter loads the original file and adds only your annotations. Existing text stays selectable, and vectors, fonts, bookmarks and embedded images are preserved. Pages are not rasterized or recompressed. Image exports also use the original pixel dimensions, not the screen preview.

Can I remove the background from a signature photo?

Yes. Upload a photo or scan in the Signature panel. The tool removes the paper background in the browser and keeps the ink, then lets you adjust removal strength and edge smoothness before placing the signature. Transparent PNG signatures are left transparent and only cropped.
